In Luke 5:27-39, Jesus calls Matthew—a despised tax collector—to follow Him, and Matthew responds with total, irreversible surrender. Matthew then brings other tax collectors and sinners to meet Jesus, showing that evangelism is the natural overflow of a changed heart, even when it offends religious sensibilities. Jesus reveals He came to bring a completely new, heart-based covenant, not to patch up the old religious system. This calls us to embrace the transformative power of the Gospel and resist becoming rigid in our faith journey.
