If all the neglected Bibles in the world were taken off their shelves and dusted off at the same time, we'd probably have the biggest dust storm in history. We have more access to God's Word than any generation before us — and we're not using it. That's a problem, because the sword only works if you pick it up.

In this message from our series "Armed and Dangerous," Pastor Ron opens Ephesians 6:17 and unpacks the one offensive weapon in the believer's armor: the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

The Sword Explained — Makira, Not Broadsword: Paul doesn't use the word for a long cavalry sword. He uses makira — a gladius, about 18 inches long, used in hand-to-hand combat. Quick, maneuverable, precise. That's exactly what Hebrews 4:12 says about God's Word: quick, powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit.

Why It's Called the Sword of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit wrote it (2 Peter 1:21). The Holy Spirit lives inside every believer as the resident truth teacher. And only a believer can truly wield this sword — because without the Spirit, the Word is foolishness (1 Corinthians 2:14). He who has the Holy Spirit in his heart and the Scriptures in his hands has all he needs.

Know Your Sword Before You Use It — Seven Things: God is its author (2 Timothy 3:16). It is infallible — no mistakes, no blots. It is inerrant — 40 men over 1,600 years writing in perfect unity like a symphony. It is authoritative — thus says the Lord. It is effective — it never returns void (Isaiah 55:10). It is sufficient — thoroughly equipping the man of God for every good work. And the canon is closed — God isn't adding to it.

Defensively — Parrying the Blows: Jesus used it three times in the wilderness. Three temptations, three times: "It is written." Each time, a specific scripture (rhema — individual words or statements from the Word, not the general concept). Satan left. Resist the devil with God's Word and he will flee. The key is knowing your sword before the battle comes.

Offensively — Taking Back Ground: God doesn't call us to just hold our ground. We are called to advance — through witnessing, teaching, restoring a brother overtaken in sin, and having devotions with our kids. Every time we open God's Word and give it to someone else, we are using the sword offensively to take back territory from the enemy.
