God’s Design for Husbands

Teacher:
Passage: Ephesians 5:25-33

A 14-year-old boy was asked what his father does around the house. His answer: he watches. He watches TV. He watches sports. He watches Mom take us to church. He watches me mow the lawn. And he watches girls.

That is not what God had in mind.

In this message from our series "Fullness," Pastor Ron opens Ephesians 5:25–33 and lays out four dimensions of love God calls every husband to bring into his marriage.

A Love That Sacrifices: The standard is staggering — love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. Agapeo: not feelings, not attraction, not emotion. A willful choice to sacrifice no matter what. Men are called to be initiators and motivators, not spectators, agitators, or dictators. When a husband is in a godly place, he can walk through the front door and turn the atmosphere of an entire home around.

A Love That Sanctifies: The husband sanctifies the marriage by bringing the Word of God into the home — not by setting up a pulpit in the living room, but by running every situation through the grid of Scripture, praying with his wife and kids, and making God's Word the foundation of every relationship in the house.

A Love That Safekeeps: A husband nourishes and cherishes his wife as his own body — same word used for tending a tender plant. He protects her physically, emotionally, and spiritually. She wasn't made from his headbone to be lorded over, or his footbone to be stepped on. She was made from his rib — to walk beside him, near his heart, protected by his arm.

A Love That Secures: The two become one flesh. That is not just physical — it is spiritual, emotional, and relational. She carries part of him wherever she goes. And when a man loves his wife this way, she will naturally want to submit — and respect follows sacrifice.
