James: To the Point

Could you be sitting in church week after week and still not be a Christian? That's one of James's biggest concerns — and he wastes no time getting to it.

In this opening message of our series "A Faith That Works," Pastor Ron introduces the book of James, covering James 1:1. More than a simple greeting, this verse sets the tone for the entire letter: that our profession of faith must match our practice. To frame the whole letter, the pastor walks through 11 tests James uses throughout the book to examine the genuineness of our faith — from how we respond to trials, to how we use our tongue, to whether we even pray.

A Right Foundation:

James introduces himself simply as "a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ" — writing to believers scattered abroad. His overarching concern throughout this letter is that Christianity isn't just something you say, it's something you live. The book is essentially a series of tests: am I a Christian, or am I not?

The 11 Tests of Genuine Faith:

James doesn't leave us guessing. Through the course of this letter, he examines our response to trials, the use of the tongue, favoritism, the relationship between faith and works, our prayer life, our attitude toward wealth, our submission to God, and more. Each test is a mirror held up to our lives.

The Call to Surrender:

Pastor Ron closes by reminding us that genuine faith begins with surrender — not going to church, not trying to be good enough, but coming to Christ in repentance and faith. As James says, life is a vapor. What will last is your soul.
