A CEO of a large company was once asked, "How many people work here?" He said, "Not very many." If we're honest, most of us have been that person at some point — doing just enough to get by, watching the clock, slacking when the boss is away.

The Right Behavior — Obedience: Paul addresses servants and masters, and by extension, every employer-employee relationship. The command is clear: be obedient to those over you. Not most of the time, not when they're nice, but continually — even to the harsh boss, because you're really working for the Lord.

The Right Respect — Fear and Trembling: Not trepidation, but deference. Hold up the position of those in authority, even when they don't deserve it personally. David, whose king was throwing spears at him, still refused to raise a hand against Saul because he respected the position God had placed him in.

The Right Motive — As to Christ: This is the hinge. Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord. When your motive is pleasing Christ and not just earning a paycheck, the whole job changes. Every believer is a full-time minister in the workplace — a missionary placed by God right where they are.

The Right Commitment — No Eye Service: Eye service is working hard when the boss is looking and slacking when they're not. God sees it all. Work as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, not as men-pleasers. Ultimately, our reward comes from the Lord.

The Right Conduct — For Employers: Masters and employers are to do the same things toward those under them — giving up threatening, treating them as they would want to be treated, knowing their own Master is in heaven
